I feel sad every time I see a picture of Karen Gillan now. Because I used to think she was so great and then she talked ignorant shit about feminism and now that’s all I can think about when I see her.
I want to reblog every photo I see of her on my dash with this quote so everyone knows what she…
i’m actually coming to a place where i think feminism might not be the issue for me anymore, but in a very different way from karen. i’m starting to feel like it really is just about women, and just about upper/middle class straight cis white western women. those women are doing pretty damn well. i fit most of those categories and i’m doing pretty damn well. and while there certainly is still room for improvement, on that front, i’d prefer to worry about women of color, lower class women, queer women, transwomen, transmen, genderqueer people, trans/queer/genderqueer/lower class women/people of color who are muslim sex workers with disabilities. please, everyone add in your mind those infinite identities i’ve left out. feminism, at least outside of certain circles, fails to recognize intersectionality, focuses on smashing patriarchy without considering how it’s tied up in the matrix of domination, can be divisive, is focused on single issues, etc, etc.
don’t get me wrong, i think feminism is great. i just think it’s limited, and it might be time to move on to something better.
so i feel like feminism needs a makeover and that’s why i’m so obsessed with it. i agree that it (for the most part) seems to preach about upper-middle class, cis, straight, white women. that is why i drag my queer latina ass into the fight and critique that shit out. there are a lot of really amazing feminists who have done an amazing job of reclaiming feminism, re-naming it and making it inclusive, productive and accessible. i’m obsessed with them and also obsessed with being able to understand the complicated feminist theory so that i can learn to critique it myself and eventually be a goddess.
i guess what i really mean is: i’ll never not be a feminist, but i’ll never just be a feminist either.
Awesome commentary! And Jae, samepersonsameperson. I think you’re a little ahead of me but I feel like I’m headed to a similar place in terms of thought. <3
